Vacation Rental Description

The Altgeld House is large and luxurious, beautifully decorated with fine 19th century American and European antiques and reproductions. It has a back yard, sundeck with umbrella table to seat ten, and a covered porch with rockers. Every modern amenity has been added for the complete comfort of our guests, including air conditioning, high-speed Internet and wifi -- you need only bring your toothbrushes. :-)

The two main apartments, Elizabeth's Place and Alice's Annex share a connecting door, so they convert to one huge unit which would sleep up to ten. Then two guests could sleep right upstairs in Kristina's Suite to fit twelve. Or the unbits may be booked seperately.

Elizabeth's Place would function as the *main* unit with its antique-filled living room with television and VCR, a formal dining room which can seat all of you, bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower, and a large eat-in kitchen with all first-rate appliances -- Dacor oven, Fisher Paykel dishwasher, Sub Zero refrigerator, and Corian counters and sink. This unit can sleep five -- two each in the two bedrooms on their queen and full beds, and a single in the book-filled study with stereo.

Alice's Annex also is a complete apartment, with a private entrance, living room, a large bedroom with a queen bed and in-wall speakers for its stereo, seating area with television and VCR, a small kitchen, dining nook, book-lined study, bathroom with tub and shower and even a complimentary front-loading washer and dryer. Five would sleep here, with two sharing the bedroom's queen bed, two more on the living room's queen sleeper sofa and one single in the sleeping alcove adjacent to the living room.

Kristina's Suite The entrance is through our kitchen door. The bedroom has a full-sized bed, a desk, a closet, and television; the newly redone private marble bathroom has a tub and shower. A door which would normally lead to the rest of the apartment is kept locked while we have guests in our home, so this is a private three-room suite (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom). We restrict our forays into the kitchen to when our guests are out -- it's a great excuse to eat out! However, we have a cat who comes into the kitchen or bathroom, so this unit would only be for guest(s) not allergic.

Area Description

Located in downtown Chicago's most upscale area, The Altgeld House offers an ideal starting point for exploring the city. For necessities, we are one block from a late-night pharmacy, the post office, dry cleaners and the library, and for any jet-lag there's a 24-hour grocery and a 24-hour restaurant also within a block.

Many city attractions also are right outside our door -- live theatres, movies, fine and casual restaurants, cafes, unique shops, music venues, museums, day spas, health clubs, the zoo, the conservatory, the lakefront, playgrounds (one right out back!), free tennis courts, farmers' markets, DePaul University, day spas, three Starbucks :-), etc. Wrigley Field is ten blocks straight up the street. And we are one block or less from the subway/el, free summer trolley, taxicabs and several buses to reach all the rest.
