Vacation Rental Description
The structure dates from the beginning of the 19th century and has 9 bedrooms each with their own en-suite bathroom. The Agriturismo is surrounded by three hectares of land with the drystone wall terraces characteristic of this area. The land is cultivated using biological methods and the products used to supply the kitchens and the meals served at the Agriturismo. In the summer, meals are served on the terrace with a spectacular view of the Castle of the Counts of Aquino, the birthplace of Saint Thomas, and in the winter in traditional style rooms with a fireplace.
Area Description
Monte Asprano Agriturismo is situated in the Comune of Roccasecca (frazione San Francesco). Roccasecca, which today forms part of the Province of Frosinone, lies at the same distance from Rome and Naples (just under 100 km). The central location of the area is demonstrated by the fact that it is crossed by the main roads and rail line linking Lazio and Campania (Autostrada del Sole, via Casilina and the Rome-Caserta railway).
The area will soon become part of a large nature reserve. Roccasecca lies just a few kilometres from the NationalPark of the Abruzzo, a spectacular place which includes a number of ski resorts. The Tyrrhenian sea and the beautiful coastal towns of Gaeta and Sperlonga are only about 30 minutes drive away.
PAYSAGE
This area has remained untouched by modern industrial development and has conserved almost intact natural landscapes of extraordinary beauty; the Melfi valley, the lake of Fibreno and the Canneto valley.
In the immediate vicinity of our Agriturismo, Monte Asprano is an atmospheric place with its tranquil walks through the mediterranean vegetation and the medieval castles of Roccasecca (the birth place of Saint Thomas of Aquino) and of Castrocielo. Monte Asprano, or more precisely Monte Sant'Angelo in Asprano, is a spur of the western slopes of Monte Cairo (1669 m), similar to that on the southern edge of the latter which is dominated by the Abbey of Montecassino. To the north, Monte Asprano is separated from the spectacular Appennine mountains of Monti della Meta (2241 m) and of the Mainarde by the Comino valley, while to the south lies the Liri valley, separated from the coast by the Ausonian and Auruncan mountains. From ancient times, this valley has been one of the two main routes which link Rome with Naples and central Italy with southern Italy. The other is the coastal route, the Via Appia, which crosses the Pontine plain.
Historically, the Liri river has often been a political and culturalboundary. As early as the 4th century BC it represented the frontier between the Romans and the Samnites, then until the 19th century between the Kingdom of Naples and the Papal State. This part of southern Lazio formed part of the Kingdom of Naples from medieval times, a fact which can still be seen today in some local traditions and the local dialect.
It is not surprising, therefore, that from ancient times to the present day this territory has been a place where different peoples and cultures have met - both on a hostile and a friendly basis.
Not by chance, the nearby town of Cassino was the setting for one of the most important and violent battles of the 2nd World War. Civilizations of every period have left a profound and lasting mark on this area: from the pre-Roman centres of the Volscian, Ernican and Samnite peoples with their striking Cyclopean walls (Alatri and Arpino), to medieval monasteries, including the oldest and most important monastery of Europe (Montecassino), to beautiful Cistercian abbeys (Casamari and Fossanova), and picturesque Renaissance and Baroque centres such as Arpino.
