Summer activities are usually centered around the water whether its fishing, sailing, motorboating, swimming, or canoeing. The Great Lakes might be a little cold for some people's taste, but there are some nice inland lakes such as Lake Hubbard as the tourists call it or Hubbard Lake (the official name). There is even a little surf that comes across Lake Michigan, but nothing substantial compared to the swells of the Pacific Ocean.
During the winter months much of the water will be ice and include activities such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. Northern Michigan is a popular tourist destination during Autumn just because of all the color-tours (changing leaves).
There is much to be done in the form of sightseeing in Michigan. If your vacation rental is near one of the Great Lakes, that will probably be your memorable sight. On the Upper Peninsula you have 40,000 acres of Tahquamenon Falls State Park. There are two big waterfalls in the park; one of which is the largest east of the Mississippi. Isle Royale State Park is a destination for visitors looking to really get away from it all. With limited resources it might not be the easiest place to find a vacation rental; a campground would be more like it. There's also Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the quaint little resort town of Mackinac Island, the Porcupine Mountains, and Seney National Wildlife Refuge. The Lower Peninsula is mostly a vast area of wilderness from forests to sand dunes to more miles of scenic beaches.
If you are looking for less of a getaway, there are bigger cities such as Detroit and Lansing which will offer historic significance and much culture in the form of dining, drinking, and the usual city sites.
