Kenmore is one of a number townships dotted along the coast of the Peninsula. The townships typically comprised 6 - 10 croft dwellings clustered around a sheltered inlet or bay on Loch Shieldaig with the residents depending on in-shore fishing and crofting as their only means of income and food.
The Applecross Peninsula in Wester Ross only became accessible to road traffic in the mid 1970's. Prior to that, the small coastal communities could only be reached by sea. Although single track roads now run around the edge of the Peninsula, it remains one of the most unspoilt areas in Scotland.
Secluded sandy beaches are a short drive along the Applecross Coast Road.
The township of Kenmore consists of 10 Houses. Flora's House is set back from the other houses - in an elevated and private position. It is a comfortable & cosy cottage - making for an ideal retreat.
The Applecross/ Torridon region is an area of stunning landscapes and outstanding natural beauty. The magnificent Torridon hills rise in steep terraces with quartzite caps overlying rich sandstone bedrock. There are numerous Munros to challenge hill climbers - Slioch, Liathach, Ben Alligan and Sgorr Ruadh to name a few. Less demanding walking may be found on the Applecross Peninsula itself following the numerous paths which linked the townships before road traffic.
The spectacular topography of the area and the stunning views may be fully appreciated on the Bealach nam Bo. This was a former drove road and now single track public road running from Tornapress west to Applecross. The route crosses the highest pass in Scotland at 626 metres above sea level. On a clear day the views are inspiring and include a unique perspective of the Cuillin on Skye although the car driver will be fully occupied negotiating the series of blind summits and hairpin bends on the road.
The sea lochs of Torridon and Shieldaig provide opportunity for sailing, kayaking and fishing. The Gulf Stream flows along the west side of the Peninsula and in addition to moderating the climate adds to the enjoyment of water sports.
Please note that bedding is provided in the cottage (Blankets & Duvets), -but not linen.
We ask guests to bring their own Sheets, duvet covers, Pillow cases, / Towels & Tea Towels.
Despite its relative remoteness, the area is well served with general stores, Post Offices and cafes at Torridon, Applecross and Shieldaig. Filling stations are located at Torridon and Applecross. A butchers and a fish mongers van make weekly journeys around the coast road stopping off at each of the townships along the way. Applecross and Shieldaig boast fine pubs and restaurants specialising in the fresh seafood of the area.
The general area is a Hillwalker's & Fisherman's paradise & renowned for it's scenic beauty and abundance of wild life. Kenmore is approx 7 miles from Shieldaig.
Excellent food can be had at Applecross - which is approx 25 minutes glorious drive along the panoramic coastal road.
